Iron Age Lowland Plateau Fort

This ovoid lowland fort was protected by a single rampart and deep, v-shaped ditch with a substantial counterscarp bank, enclosing an area of about 12½ acres (5.1ha). The outline of a single large round-house lying in the centre of the fort surrounded by numerous smaller buildings has been observed on aerial photo's. Surface finds of animal bones and pottery sherds have dated the occupancy of the camp between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. It appears that the fort was occupied by a single, large family group, and might best be regarded as a defended farming settlement.
