Iron-Age Hillfort

This ovoid fort of 24 acres (9.7ha) which dominates the Wylye valley, was protected by a double rampart with median ditch, and triple defence on the more vulnerable west side. Entrances with outworks are on the east and north-west. Outside the east entrance is what appears to be a war cemetary, containing the skeletons of men, women and children, perhaps the result of a seige by the Second Augustan Legion during the initial Roman invasion campaigns. Finds from storage pits inside the fort include pottery, querns, whetstones, slingstones, animal bones and iron tools.
