Iron-Age Hillfort

The first occupancy of this site was an unfortified settlement in the early Iron age. This was fortified in c.400BC by the addition of a dump rampart of chalk, about 40 feet (c.12m) wide at the base and 8 feet (2.4m) high, fronted by a wide ditch and counterscarp bank. There is an inturned entrance on the north-east. The fort was evidently sacked c.50BC, possibly by invading Belgic settlers, after which it was abandoned. Excavation has suggested 4 stages of construction.
