Iron-Age Hillfort

A triangular fort protected on the north-east by the Avon Gorge, on the south by the Nightingale Valley and by a triple, curving rampart on the landward side. The outer bank was only slight, but the massive inner bank of dumped limestone is 30 feet (over 9m) high. There was an entrance gap in the north-west corner. Excavation shows that the fortwas built in the late 3rd century BC and occupied until the mid-1st century AD; there was some further use in the 3rd, but the site was finally abandoned by 400AD.
