Winkelbury Hill

Berwick St John, Wiltshire

NGRef: ST952218
OSMap: LR184
Sitetype: IApf

This triangular fort on a long, narrow, steep-sided spur, seems to have been developed in three phases. In the early Iron-age (5th-4th century BC), 5ha of the spur was cut off by the building of 2 sets of ramparts and ditches, set wide apart. Around 250BC a rampart was begun round the edge of the escarpment, but remained unfinished. Finally, c.50BC, a curved rampart and ditch was built at the end of the spur, enclosing an area of about 4½ acres (c.1.8ha), with an entrance at the eastern end.
