Bankhead Camp 1
NS983450 1,730 x 1,280 ft
(526 x 389 m)
50¾ acres
(20.5 ha)
The whole of the south and west sides of this camp are known, together with about half of the north side and a short length of the east, making a reasonable estimate of its size to be made. There appears to be a centrally placed gateway with traverse in the short south side, and two similarly defended gates in the west side; these arrangements were presumably mirrored in the fragmentary north and east sides. There is a slight change of alignment in the west side at the south gateway, which must have resulted in a re-entrant angle at the corresponding gateway in the east side.
Bankhead Camp 2
NS9845 c.1,150 x 1,150 ft
(c.350 x 350 m)
c.30¼ acres
(c.12.3 ha)
This camp is square in outline and has almost its entire perimeter recorded. There is a gateway with traverse set at a re-entrant angle in the centre of the northern defences; it is unclear whether the other gateways were similarly located and defended.
