The hearths of two iron-smelting furnaces were discovered at Holbeanwood in 1970, and associated but sparse pottery finds proved that they were in use during the Roman period. Seven Roman iron-working bloomeries were recorded in the area around Bardown (TQ6629) and Holbeanwood (TQ6630) at this time. There are many other Roman iron-workings in the Weald, most of which are clustered around Holtye to the west or near Hastings in the south-east.
